Have you ever seen worker who hangs
on the thick ropes outside the window of your kitchen on the 16th floor?
Can you tell me where I took this
picture? Probably not. It is great Russian Capital Moscow, near the Taganskya
Square. That winter I and my friend and partner Kolya were working as an
"emergency repairing team" in this area. |
The former communist government
of USSR was smarter then you could think: it existed at the expense of
the future. It did almost no necessary maintenance work. So, in the early
90-th, when we worked, a lot of living and industrial buildings were in
the catastrophic condition. But what was bad for the country, was not so
bad for us. We found great and stable way to earn money. Plus we found
the job we really enjoyed.
We repaired joints between the
concrete slabs on the building's walls... |

...Sealed and painted balconies
and windows. And we could see how our work made the live a little bit better
for the people who lived in that buildings.
You would be surprised of how many
intelligent well-educated people do this kind of work in Russia. On the
one hand, such people could earn much more money here than in public (not
private !) universities. On the other hand, this somewhat romantic job,
as well as mountain climbing itself, always attracted intelligent people
everywhere. |
